Some people claim that this requirement is going to be gratificating to students and also will benefit their way of thinking and seing the world. Others believe students will resent and consequently hate community service because they will be obligated by school, resulting in contrary expectations, making them avoid getting envolved in social projects.
Although I am very commited in many social projects to improve my community, I believe that imposing community service is not the right path to follow. I strongly believe that the willing to help others and improve diferent scenarios is something that blooms in yourself. People need to have this feeling by their own.
On the other hand, I think it is necessary having an encouragement by the school, to help students getting in touch with social projects and making them get involved by themselves, not because the school imposed.
I know many people in my town that might be interested in community service but they don't have the necessary tools to get envolved or even know how to do it! So the school could be the bridge between their interested alumni and the social services.
We have in our history, many people who destacated themselves by making social services, like Mother Teresa. Her story inspire love, caring and the importance of giving.
But there are many aspects that must be analysed and taken into consideration.
From a psycological aspect, community service directly affect the way people see and care about their community, allowing them to spread the good, even if it is on a small action.
From an economical aspect, many of social services are volunteered. On the one hand, this is positive for those who need the help, making them save cash. On the other hand, some people dislike because they feel it is necessary and fair receive some money by the time and energy spent on the service.
From a social aspect: getting involved in a community service allow people to participate more actively on their realm, transmiting the feeling they are making something beneficial to those they are helping. In addition it allows make new connections and friendships with different people with different backgrounds.
So, in conclusion, I believe community service should not be imposed by school, but supported and incentivated by them.
When I start to feel tired with all my activities, I think on Gandhi's quote " you must be the change you wish to see in the world" and I strongly believe this change begins with small actions, made by community service.
